Business as Usual

“Business as Usual” are the three most common words from Dana White since he announced to Ariel Helwani of mmafighting.com that Zuffa, LLC the company that owns the UFC had bought its main competitor Strikeforce.

Now that both Strikeforce and the UFC belong to the same company, most fans want are clamoring for super fights pitting the elite of Strikeforce against those of the UFC. White has promised that contracts will be honored and they will not co-promote. Even within the same company. I am okay with honoring contracts and not having a huge UFC/Strikeforce super card, but what I would like to see are trades.

Think back a few weeks ago to the NBA trade deadline, fans were checking twitter for up to date news on their teams and favorite players. The buzz was about Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams getting dealt in blockbuster trades. I would like to see some of those trades happen in the world of MMA.

Here are a couple of trades that I think make sense.

Rashad Evans to Strikeforce

With UFC 128 happening this weekend, Jon Jones is favored to defeat Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the Light Heavyweight Championship and could potentially defend his belt against fellow Greg Jackson team member Rashad Evans.

After defeating Rafael Calvacante on March 5, Dan Henderson is awaiting his next opponent. A few names have been mentioned, by why not allow Rashad Evans to move to Strikeforce and compete for the belt at his current weight.

I am sure Scott Coker would be able to come up with a good offer to Dana White that will help boost views of the Strikeforce card as well keep Rashad and Jones in the same camp.

King Mo to UFC

Since the purchase of Strikeforce, King Mo has already tweeted about his desire to compete the best the UFC has to offer. The former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion tweeted, “One good this is that there will be battles...That I wanna be in...Rampage, Jones, Rua, Davis...etc...All good fighters I wanna fight..”

King Mo has already headlined a fight at Strikeforce: Houston and he is eager to get in the Octagon against the best the UFC has to offer.

In my opinion the UFC Light Heavyweight division is strong and adding the former three time National Wrestling Champion to its ranks would only increase it.

Just like the NBA trade deadline a few weeks ago, trades between the UFC and Strikeforce would generate a large interest among fans and the media. While Dana White has said that it will be “Business as Usual” and both promotions will remain separate for the time being, adding the dynamic of trading between the two would be exciting and would satisfy some of that hunger of super fights from the fans.
